Today we want to show you how data can be transferred from the pCon.planner to the pCon.box – and thus directly to the point of sale – using the PEC exchange format.

After you have planned your ideas in pCon.planner, go to “File”, “Export” and select “pCon”. In the next dialogue you can choose from various files, we need the “pCon exchange Container” – or short: PEC.

Sometimes you want to present a whole planning and sometimes you want to talk about special areas of your idea. You can choose to select only a selection of objects or even the whole plan – it’s up to you.

To use your exported PEC file on your mobile device, you can upload to a cloud storage like Dropbox or OneDrive or send it via Mail to your customer or partner. Start the pCon.box and navigate to “Import” and search for the file on your device.

After you have imported the PEC file into your working area, you can move, rotate and select all objects like you could in pCon.planner. But we have one more thing: You can also configure your OFML-data to meet the needs of your customer.

„To help you find more relevant content, we’re making some changes. Starting in October you will need to sign in to 3D Warehouse to download models.

The 3D Warehouse wants to offer a more personalized user experience by signing up. In addition, own collections can be created and interesting models can be found more easily.

Will downloading models from the 3D Warehouse now be chargeable? No. Only a logged in user is required, so that the download will start. The account can be created for free or you can sign in with your existing Google Account.

We’ll keep you up to date! Currently there is no detailed information available from Trimble, from which day in October, the changes will take place. Of course we will inform you right here about further changes.

3D models can be obtained from a wide variety of sources and often have a large file size – resulting in long loading times and performance losses. An effective reduction of the data volume leads to more reliability and speed in planning.

In this blog we have summarized 3 tips with which 3D models of different formats can be optimized in pCon.planner without loss of quality.

Tip 1: If the performance of your planning is diminishing, then you should clean it up!
It’s the fastest and most obvious tip. Cleaning up your planning from time to time reduces planning mistakes and deletes unused materials. Click in the top left corner on “file” and select “purge” to clean up your planning.

Tip 2: Work in DWG format!
If you download models from 3D Warehouse, these are usually SKP models. For pCon.planner this is no problem, because it is able to process many CAD-models from other 3D programs like SketchUp or AutoCAD. If you want to optimize the 3D models, make sure to convert it to the DWG format, which pCon.planner natively works with.

Just import the file and then without any changes drag it back to your media-browser. We used this red bench which had over 40 MB as SKP file and reduced it to 12 MB just by exporting it into DWG format. That’s a reduction by a factor of three.

Tip 3: Optimize your textures!
In the material editor you can see, that the red bench has a very high quality texture with a dimensioning of 2500×2500 Pixels. You don’t need a texture this big for every piece of furniture in a whole room, it just blows up the file size.

You can export the texture by right clicking on it in the material editor and reduce it’s size with the common Windows tools. Just open the image, click resize and save it in the desired quality. In this case the texture was 4 MB and could be reduced to around 500 KB – that’s a reduction by a factor of eight!

After that just attach the new smaller texture to your model, purge the planning and save it again as DWG file. After all, the file size could be reduced from over 40 MB at the start to around 8 MB at the end. That’s a reduction by a factor of five in just five minutes!

Some notes at the end: Not with every model this process does make such a big difference. Due to the large number of formats, there is no uniform solution for all of them. Some models are optimized for a certain program or render algorithm and you should trust the creator with this! In any case: Make sure to use the powerful conversion algorithm of pCon.planner to reduce meshes and your file size effectively.

The time has come: Trimble® has implemented the announced change, which we have already reported on in this article. From now on, you can only download models from the 3D Warehouse if you are logged in. Thus, the operator of the world’s largest collection of free 3D models joins many other portals that already have been demanding users to register.

How do I download models now? This is almost as easy as before. Click on the small person in the top right corner of the 3D Warehouse homepage and log in with your existing Google account or create a new Trimble Account for free. Once you are logged in, you can download models as usual.

Creating appealing presentations is a daily business for specialist planners and interior designers. The goal is to present changes and progress in the project, to promote new ideas and to create transparency. This often raises the question of which perspective shows the right details and gives the customer the best overview.

Users of the pCon.planner appreciate the advantages and interactivity of 3D: Furniture can be configured according to individual specifications and entire rooms can be viewed from every imaginable angle. When it comes to selecting a presentation tool with which various media and additional information can be combined, Microsoft PowerPoint has proven its worth.

A bridge can now be built between these two worlds: Microsoft’s latest Office solutions (Office 365 or Office 2019) allow users to insert 3D models into PowerPoint. With pCon.planner 8.2, specialist planners and interior designers are able to use this function and integrate individual models or even entire room plans into their PowerPoint presentations using copy&paste.

You can rotate the model 360°, tilt it up and down and seamlessly combine it with other content such as text, photos or sketches to interactively focus on the right details. With 3D models in your presentations, you no longer have to prepare every view, but focus on the essentials: convincingly marketing the project. Should there still be any unanswered questions, you will always be able to switch to a different perspective.

Note: You need Microsoft Office 365 or Office 2019 to insert and use 3D models in your presentations. Previous versions do not support this feature.

Here’s how it works: Plan the configuration you want to present with pCon.planner as usual. Then select the individual model or the entire planning, navigate to the clipboard and select “3D Model Microsoft“. Open your presentation and add interactive content to your slides using Copy&Paste.
